Mount Alava

Adventurous families who enjoy hiking will be rewarded with great views from Mount Alava. The approximately seven-mile roundtrip hike runs along the ridge in dense forest to the top of Mount Alava. Along the trail, families will also find World War II gun emplacement sites at Breakers Point and Blunt's Point.

Cloud Rainforest to Reef Hike

Families who hike to the top of Mount Alava have an opportunity to explore the Cloud Rainforest to Reef Hike. At the top, the rainforest is in a cloud and the moss-covered trees create a canopy. Note the terrain diversity while hiking down through the forest to the sea. Allow about five hours to complete this long but moderate hike.

Jean P. Haydon Museum

Housed in two historical US Navy buildings, the Jean P. Haydon Museum (named after the wife of Governor John M. Haydon who helped establish the Museum) has interesting historical artifacts, books and collections. Don’t miss the exhibit showing a small Samoa flag and three moon stones that were gifted to the American Samoa Government by President Richard Nixon following the return of the Apollo Moon missions. The flag was carried to the moon by the astronauts.

Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa

Located in Polynesia’s oldest culture, the Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa protects the area’s greatest diversity of coral, fish, turtles, marine mammals and marine plants. Of all the areas in the National Marine Sanctuary System, the American Samoa sanctuary is the most remote and is the only true tropical reef.
