Description

Without a doubt, one of the most kid-friendly attractions in New Orleans, Louisiana, is the magnificent Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, located on the edge of the French Quarter, facing the mighty Mississippi River. A wide array of exhibits and animal feedings and shows will keep families on their toes. At the Amazon Rain Forest exhibit, which features fearsome piranhas, rare dart frogs and many other creatures, kids will learn what makes this ecosystem important to Earth. Explore the colors of the Caribbean reef at the walk-through underwater tunnel with amazing views of moray eels, cownose rays, angelfish and exotic sea creatures. Check the schedule to watch a diver hand-feed the rays. Also impressive is the 400,000-gallon, floor-to-ceiling Gulf of Mexico Exhibit, home to gigantic sharks, tarpon and rays. At the penguin exhibit, kids of all ages will be amused by the waddling, hopping, diving and swimming of South American and African penguins – temperate birds that prefer warm water. Not to be missed is the Mississippi River Gallery featuring catfish, sturgeon, paddlefish and Spots, the white alligator with blue eyes. Among the aquarium’s newest exhibit is the interactive Geaux Fish! showcasing Louisiana’s fishing industry and its importance to the region. It also highlights various game fish, bait fish and commercial seafood of Louisiana. Guests can cast a virtual reel, identify local species, visit a seafood market or hop on a fishing boat. When it’s time to feed the kids, head to the Aquarium Food Court for made-to-order hot sandwiches and fresh salads at Aqua Grill or pizza from Papa John’s. Save room for dessert at Haagen Dazs Ice Cream.

Tips for Families

I would plan a 5 day visit at least, unless you live near by. I would buy the all inclusive tickets. Also see City Park, the Art museum, WW2 (with older kids) and Mardi Gras World.

Tips for Families

Don't worry about lunch. There is a great little eatery right there onsite that offers anything a kid could want. Don't miss the gift shop. The products are not too pricey and there is a lot to choose from. Don't forget to turn off your camera flash. The pictures of glass tanks do NOT like the flash and you will not get a good picture.

Tips for Families

Go early for less crowd. If you want to feed the sting rays buy your tokens early, sometimes they sell out.

My daughter kept telling me this aquarium was boring and I kept  brushing off her opinion as that of a  teen that  is hard to impress. Well, she was right. It is kind of boring. They do have cute otters, stingrays to pet, a massive gift shop and some nice exhibits. But, you can easily see everyt...
