Description

Exotic animals from around the world, lush gardens, educational programs and interactive demonstrations will keep parents and kids of all ages entertained for hours at the Audubon Zoo in Uptown New Orleans. The main tourist attraction, of course, are the animals housed in the zoo’s unique natural habitat exhibits. The award-winning exhibits, such as at the Louisiana Swamp and Jaguar Jungle habitats, showcase the relationship between people and nature. At the Louisiana Swamp exhibit -- which has received national acclaim for its innovative portrayal of Louisiana culture – visitors will learn all about swamps and have opportunities to watch alligator feedings. The exhibit is among the zoo’s top attractions, as it explores the relationships between the Cajun people, plants and animals of the swamp, in food, industry and daily life. To teach visitors about conservation in the Louisiana Swamp, the Audubon Zoo staff uses animal exhibits -- black bears, blue crabs, water snakes and red foxes – for educational presentations. In addition to the exhibits, toddlers through teens will go wild over the zoo’s hands-on animal encounters and the sea lion and elephant presentations. Not to be missed are the highly endangered whopping cranes, Amur leopards and orangutans, the zoo’s white tiger and mysterious white alligator. When it comes to feeding its visitors, the Audubon Zoo does a good job of offering a nice mix of dining options. More than half a dozen eateries offer food, sweets and beverages. For a taste of traditional New Orleans fare, head to the Cypress Knee Café and enjoy a relaxing meal in the air-conditioned Cajun Ballroom or picnic on the outside deck overlooking the swamp. Before leaving the Audubon Zoo, take time to peruse the gift shops. As the Swamp Gift Shop, find Louisiana-themed souvenirs, such as stuffed animals, clothes, toys and kitchen items including cookbooks. It is no wonder the Audubon Zoo is among the top New Orleans attractions for kids.

Tips for Families

If you are planning to visit the Aquarium and Insectarium as well, consider purchasing a combo pass to save money. All three can be visited in one day but it makes for a very long day for the kids and you might miss some exhibits.

Tips for Families

Even in the summer when it gets excruciatingly hot and humid the Audubon Zoo is a great destination. There's plenty of shade and places to sit and catch your breath. Bring your own stroller.

This zoo ranks near the top for me, alongside San Diego Zoo.  Lots of animals, layout is awesome.  It's kind of out of the way from the touristy area, but not horrible to get there.  Hop on the street car and look for the shuttle van.  I personally recommend skipping the shuttle and walking through the park.  About a 20 min walk if I remember cor...
