With an emphasis on spotlighting local workers and small business owners, the Baltimore Museum of Industry's collections document people who were integral in establishing the area as well as making national contributions. Baltimore has long been recognized as a major industrial center and is home to the nation's first passenger railway, oldest gas company, first traffic light and many other inventions and innovations. The museum's more than 1,000,000 artifacts displayed in galleries depict Baltimore's history and explain how residents -- no matter their station in life, race, ethnicity, or occupation -- contributed to this development. Locals and tourists alike can take a step back in time to the early days of a port city through the museum's exhibits and programs. From food canning to broadcasting, visitors can interact with the technologies which forged the Industrial Revolution and brought Baltimore, Maryland to the 21st century. Kids will be fascinated as they step into vividly-recreated workshops on machining, printing, garment-making and metalworking. Families can explore exhibits, such as a 1910 Pharmacy, the country's first gas company, the world's first disposable bottle cap and America's first umbrella manufacturer. They'll also learn about Baltimore's role as one of the busiest and most important ports in America and see a replica of an early dock and dockmaster's shed. Walk through the original 1865 Platt Oyster Cannery structure, the only surviving cannery building in the city. Located outside the museum is the coal-fired S.S. Baltimore, the only operating steam tugboat in the Country -- a National Historic Landmark lovingly restored and maintained by a team of volunteers. In addition to the many galleries, the Baltimore Museum of Industry offers family-friendly programs for preschoolers, school-aged children and adults. For example, on Family Fun Night on the second Thursday of each month, the entire family can enjoy tours, crafts, movies and more. Wee Workers, for preschool-aged children, explores the museum through songs, stories, tours and crafts.
