The Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor holds much significance as the oldest cathedral in the Americas. First commissioned in 1504 by Pope Julius, construction began in 1512 under the leadership of Bishop Frey Garcia Padilla and was completed in 1535. It is located inside the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral houses a treasury holding a collection of ancient woodcarvings, furnishings, funerary monuments, silver, and jewelry.
