Black Sand Basin, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming| Map |
Black Sand Basin contains one of Yellowstone National Park’s most colorful array of features, and should be included on any family vacation itinerary. Located just half a mile north of Old Faithful, the Basin gets its color from the fragments of black obsidian left over from the original volcanic flow that formed the basin. A small but impressive collection of geysers and hot springs can be seen here, including the deep green Emerald Pool, Spouter and Cliff Geysers, and the beautiful Opalescent and Rainbow pools. Visitors are fascinated by the colors present in the pools and the eerie eruptions of boiling water. The Old Faithful visitors center is the nearest stop, which is a good place to pick up information about the geysers and ranger-led interpretive walks in the area. The Black Sand Basin is one of Yellowstone’s premier attractions, and is not to be missed.
