    Where the Hip Meet

Built in 1909, the Hotel Boulderado is a bit of old Colorado I couldn’t resist sharing with my kids. They’re used to newish hotels so this one threw them– it’s very western Victorian with an incredible stained glass ceiling and cantilevered cherry wood staircase. The rooms are styled in the turn of the century fashion, many with views of the Flatirons (Boulder’s section of the Rocky Mountains). My kids refer to this style as “fancy” and were afraid to touch anything until a maid told them that if the furnishings had lasted this long, surely they could withstand 3 more kids! That was all my son needed to hear to start roaming the hotel, looking for the notorious ghost on the 5th floor. Staff members were kind and funny and offered up stories to fuel his vivd imagination. I found myself equally drawn into the incredible history of this beautiful hotel. Other little things that thrilled the kids were the drinking fountain that boasts the best water in Colorado, straight from the Arapahoe Glacier and the ancient (i.e. spooky) Otis elevator that has to be manually operated by staff. We all love the location of the hotel, just a block off the pedestrian Pearl Street Mall. The Mall comes alive in the summer with street performers and sidewalk cafes, boulders to climb on, and shops to explore. Boulder B-Cycle has recently established bike share stations all over town, where for $7 you can check out a bike at one location and turn it in at another all day long. This is the BEST way to see Boulder– the bike paths here are amazing. We’ve done easy rides and more strenuous ones… and always end up back at the Corner Bar at the Boulderado for a refreshing treat at the end of the day!

    Tips for Families

Comfortable shoes that can get wet are great for Boulder in the summer! Bike along the creek, stopping near the library for a quick wade or even a float! Make sure you take in a concert or a movie at the historic Chataqua, right at the base of the Flatirons. Back at the Boulderado, if the ghosts spook the kids, try the new section attached, with the same fabulous amenities but without the unexplained occurences!
