We hiked up the Bright Angel Trail in mid-July, after hiking down on the South Kaibab trail the day before.  We stayed over night at the Phantom Ranch ( http://www.yelp.com/bi... ) as no one recommends hiking down and up in 1 day. The Bright Angel Trail is a 9.5-mile hike bottom to top.  We left a little after 5 am, and had made it to the 'halfway' point (in terms of distance, but about 1/3 the ascent) within about 2 hours.  Easy as pie.  It was shady and relatively cool because it's somewhat forested at the bottom, but gets to over 100F in the summer so keep that in mind.
