Visitors to the Butterfly Pavilion may be surprised to find thousands of animals and insects -- not just butterflies, although there are plenty of those. The Butterfly Pavilion is an invertebrate zoo featuring mostly arthropods -- living things that have exoskeletons, segmented bodies, and jointed attachments called appendages. These include everything from tropical butterflies in the pavilion’s rainforest to sea stars at the Water’s Edge exhibit, where kids can touch sea cucumbers and horseshoe crabs. Wings of the Tropics is alive with 1,200 butterflies from rainforests around the world. Kids who like creepy-crawlers will go wild over the scorpions, tarantulas, leaf insects and giant millipedes at the Crawl-A-See-Em exhibit. They can even hold a Chilean Rose Hair tarantula!
Tips for Families
Take a hike outside the Butterfly Pavilion’s native habitats and watch local invertebrates in action.
