Tips for Families

Since we were there in January and we went on a weekday, we never had to wait in the lines people like to complain about. Trying to ride this on a sunny summer weekend will guarantee you end up with a long wait and annoyed and cranky kids.

Yes, it's pricey for the ride but it's the experience you're paying for. We paid $12 round-trips.  Our kids enjoyed the ride.  It was cold that day, so we sat inside and view the town through the glass. Since this is a hot item that tourists do, expect very long lines.  We waited at Fisherman's Wharf early, still a long wait but able to take pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge and boat/water scentery while we waited. When you get off the last stop in the Shopping Center if you're coming from the Fisherman's Wharf and have a return ticket, don't wait in the super long line at the Shopping Center.  Walk up a block and wait for the cable car, you'll save at least 45 minutes.  They always take a few passengers on...

Traveling with wife and 3 kids, and although my wife and I have been to SF on numerous occasions, decided to give the kids a taste of the city.  While spending time in line (took about 30 minutes) can certainly be a drag with kids (ages 7, 6 and 2) we managed just fine.  Our drivers, to the Wharf and back, could not have been more enjoyable.  Represen...

Spent today playing tourist with my 16 yr old niece, so of course we took a cable car ride from Powell St.  We both had a ball, thanks mostly to our fun, knowledgeable, and charming driver!  We got off at Lombard, took great photos, hung out at the end ...

There are certain experiences in life which make you feel like a kid: receiving a new toy, picking your nose and not caring, and riding a cable car while hanging off of one of the outside rails. We were blessed with a phenomenally beautiful last day of our trip in SF (it had been slightly dreary the rest of the weekend).  We wanted to go to Fisherman's Wharf, so we boarded a car at the Powell Turnaround and took the Hyde Line (this is the one which passes the top of the curvy part of Lombard Street). We had to wait about 15min (not painful at all).  When our car arrived, I was on a mission.  I wanted to hang off one of the poles on the side.  Boom---I nabbed a spot on the front!!  Nice.   "No takin' photos w...

One star to the ignorant SFMUNI employees and five stars to the cable cars.   My family and I waited in line on December 26, 2009 to ride this historic mode of transportation. While in line it rained. The cars stopped running but NO refunds were issued. All refunds were via the mailing process. Rules are rules. No problem. BUT, the SFMUNI employee that sold me the ticket refunded some on the spot while others were told to mail in for the money! WTF! So, I inquired why some were getting immediate refunds and others had to mail in for it? No response. I reported it to SFMUNI and hope this guy get fired. Moral of the story:  SFMUNI "rules" (term "rules" used loosely) states refunds are via the mail ONLY. So, bu...
