Built in 1910, Forest Theater was one of the earliest outdoor amphitheaters west of the Rockies. Its focus was to showcase original works by California authors, children's theater and the plays of Shakespeare. It has since gone through various uses but today the stage of the 540-seat outdoor amphitheater, located on Mountain View Avenue and Santa Rita Street, is framed by towering pine trees and huge open fireplaces, making the venue ideal for the plays and musicals produced and presented by the Pacific Repertory Theatre. The professional theater group performs Shakespeare’s work and other great plays from around the world throughout the year but in early August and September the group presents a special annual family musical, followed by the annual Carmel Shakespeare Festival.
