With its location in the heart of the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks, the Cascade Cross Country Center has about 12 miles of groomed and wind-protected scenic trails through snowy forests. Things to see and do with kids abound at this full-service cross-country center, situated about five miles from Lake Placid, New York. The modern lodge houses a ski shop, rental facilities, restaurant, bar, large fireplace and bunkrooms for overnight accommodations. Families can rent cross-country gear and navigate the trails on their own or take lessons available for all level skiers. The rental facilities offer the same equipment that is sold in the ski shop. Skiers interested in buying equipment can test skis on the trails and have the rental fee deducted from the purchase price. Telemark, racing equipment and snowshoes are also available to rent. Beginner, intermediate and expert cross-country skiers will find plenty of trails to match their skill level. The Cascade Cross Country Center trails connect with the Olympic Mt. Van Hoevenberg and Jack Rabbit trail systems. Families should inquire about the inter-connect tickets at the office. For an element of adventure, families can join a full moon party during the winter season. The trails are lit for evening skiing under the stars and moonlight. Bonfires, hotdogs and hot chocolate are provided outdoors on the trails. After an exhilarating evening of skiing, families can huddle close to the fireplace inside the lodge and enjoy food and drinks while listening to a live band. Those staying the night will be accommodated with dorm-style lodging that includes breakfast.
