Country Boy Mine, Breckenridge, Colorado

Though located in nearby Breckenridge, the Country Boy Mine Tour is well worth the modest drive. This historic gold mine, which operated from 1887 up until 1973, even produced lead and zinc for use in World War I and World War II. Today, however, the famous mine allows visitors to step into the boots of an old prospector (so to speak) and learn all about the mining trade and culture, and has been recommended by the New York Times, Today Show and even the Travel Channel. Modern day explorers can spend 45 minutes venturing more than 1,000 feet through the mine, all while listening to stories of the area’s significant mining history. After that, it’s time to pan for gold pan in the Eureka Creek, visit the blacksmith shop and general store or make friends with the resident burros. Plus great souvenirs are available in the gift shop.

Interesting tourFlag review
My son was really looking forward to “becoming rich” and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Country Boy Mine. It’s actually opened year round, but closed on weekends in the Fall and Winter. The woman who led our 45 minute tour was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions at the end of the tour. My son really enjoyed panning for gold at the end of the tour, petting the burros and going on the ore chute slide. There was a gift shop as well.
