Roasting Marshmallows over Lava!Flag review
This was a great adventure that our family still talks about. It takes about 2 or 3 hours to climb up volcano. Horses are available up until you get to the volcanic fields for the kids to ride if they can't make the climb the whole way up. My kids were 8 1/2 when we went and they didn't have any problem climbing up and down, but they were tired out afterward. The most memorable part our journey was roast marshmallows over the lava vents. You could see the heat vapors rising off of them. It is best to go with a guide as they take climbers up the volcano all the time and tell you where it is safe to walk. Our guide would walk ahead of us and then tell us the safest way to walk. We did not go all the way to the top as it gets harder and harder to climb, especially with kids in tow. We stayed away from the lava flow, but we could still see lava coming down from the crater higher above us. Another one of the highlights of this trek was running down the lava fields, they felt like they were running on the moon. Our family still talks about this trip, it was one of our highlights of our time in Central America. I would definitely recommend this to a family, as long as you have the proper guide to keep you safe, as weather is also a consideration.
Tips for Families
We used OX Outfitters out of Antigua and had a private guide. We were really happy with them. They arranged the whole trip, transportation, guide and lunch on the volcano. Wear closed toe shoes. My daughter wore Keen's and the tiny volcano rocks kept getting in them so we would have to stop to empty them. Bring bicycling gloves for the kids, the ones with open fingers. The volcanic rock is like glass and you can easily gash yourself on it. This gave the kids some hand protection so they could grab on to the rock and steady themselves. Be sure to use the bathrooms in the little town before you start your climb, as there are no more on the trail.
