Beautifully landscaped gardens, trees, dog-friendly trails, wildlife and historic buildings comprise the 207-acre Cylburn Arboretum in Baltimore, Maryland. The first stop should be to the visitor and education center for maps and pamphlets before exploring the scenic property. More than 20 themed gardens ornament the grounds at Baltimore's Cylburn Arboretum, consisting of more than 150 acres of urban park with memorial, habitat and traditional landscaping. Several of the arboretum?s collection of trees and shrubs date back to the late 1800s, such as the grove of Japanese Maples. Families will love that they can bring their dog and explore more than three miles of woodland trails ideal for kids of all ages. Older kids will enjoy hiking and looking for critters while young children will be happy to explore nature trails, which range from easy to moderately difficult depending on the terrain, are studded with wildflowers and are a great place for birding. Cylburn's forest is among the few wooded areas in the City of Baltimore and is the area?s largest public garden. In addition to the lovely gardens and trails, the Cylburn Arboretum has a nature museum, housed in the historic Carriage House. The historic Carriage House, which was completed with the Mansion in the 1880?s, was built to hold horses, hay, feed and carriages. The original Carriage House burned to the ground in 1912, leaving only the walls and a porch. It was rebuilt the following year. Families won?t want to miss browsing through the museum, which features more than 250 mounted specimens, nests and eggs. There are also butterflies, fossils, seashells, skulls, rocks and a small hands-on exploration area and library. At family programs and events, kids and adults learn how to create their own gardens, make holiday decorations using natural items and more.
