Dinosaur Ridge, Denver, Colorado
Denver, Colorado| Map |
Dinosaur Ridge is among the very few places where the public can walk on trails where the massive creatures once lived. Built by the City of Denver and maintained by the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge, the area is a designated National Natural Landmark. Exhibits and trails were created to help the public explore dinosaur tracks and fossils. Kids will be amazed to see hundreds of dinosaur tracks, a quarry of dinosaur bones and interesting geologic features on the Dinosaur Ridge Trail. Another interesting hike is the 1.5-mile Triceratops Trail, which winds between large, vertical walls of sandstone. From here, the approximately 100-million-year-old dinosaur tracks are viewed from above. Visitors will also see invertebrate tracks and traces, as well as several walls full of plant impressions from the tree-lined delta-like environment. At the Dinosaur Ridge Bone Quarry, families will be able to see and touch dinosaur bones in the rock where they fossilized. The Visitor Center’s exhibits are worth seeing too. At Trek Through Time, kids will learn how footprints are preserved and how layers of rock form. Young kids can see how paleontologists search for fossil evidence at the Backyard Bones site, a simulated dinosaur dig.
