The Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) is one impressive piece of architecture. The Palace's first stones were laid as far back as the ninth century, and the imposing waterfront edifice has undergone several design transitions throughout its long history. With its massive white limestone walls and pink marble walls, grace porticos, carvings of various flora, fauna and Biblical big shots and giant statues of Neptune and Mars, the Palace is a visually stunning time capsule of Venice throughout the centuries. To get the full experience, visitors should check out the Secret Itinerary tour, which winds through the Palace's numerous rooms and chambers while giving participants the inside scoop on the city?s colorful history. Kids will love traversing the secret passageways, prison and even torture chambers.
