Jockey's Ridge State Park is a state park that includes the tallest active sand dune system in the eastern United States. The park is a day-use only park and has no campgrounds.
Tips for Families
For summer visitors: The sand on the dunes is incredibly hot during the summer months. On average, the sand will be 25 to 30 degrees hotter than the air temperature, so when it's 95 degrees, the sand will be 125 degrees.

Twenty Minute Excursion
I'm not sure what the fascination is with this really? Then again I have been to Pismo Beach in California and White Sands in New Mexico so this was just a play it again experience. A must do
Grab a good kite before you go and be ready to hike up the huge sand dunes here. The ''hike'' is also really just a 10 minute walk that even small kids would be capable of so don't let that scare you. The view from the top of the sand dune is so pretty, you can see the ocean and the sound. There are kids frolicking down the face of the sand dune and kites flying and hand gliders learning to hand glide. Overall a really cool place to spend a few hours. We had our kite flying with really minimal effort (absolutely no running involved). The park and parking were free but I would definitely bring some bug spray or you might get carried away by the huge mosquitoes lurking at the entrance to the park. Oh, and be s...
