My Favorite Fall Destination in Upstate New York!Flag review
Just outside of Cooperstown (which offers its own bevy of attractions), the Fly Creek Cider Mill is my favorite place to take my daughter in the Fall. If you're anywhere near Cooperstown - as in, within 100 miles or so - you need to go. I brought my mom along with us in the Fall of 2012, and she was wowed. Make sure you arrive hungry, because the cider mill offers free samples of nearly every dip, spread, sauce, salsa, soup, chili, salad dressing, jelly/jam, marinade, maple syrup, cheese, fudge, snack food, and candy they sell in the store. And be prepared to shop - from apples to specialty baking mixes to whole pies to caramel apples to jugs of cider pressed on the premises, there is plenty to take home. My husband's favorite sweet is the penuche fudge; mine is the pistachio. Stay for lunch at the cafe/bakery and Don't forget to go upstairs to see the mill in action and to check out the store full of Christmas ornaments and gifts.
Tips for Families
You can arrange formal tours of the cider mill for both large and small groups via the website. Kids will love the Tractorland play area outside of the cider mill, as well as feeding the resident ducks and geese. Guests are not permitted to picnic with their own food, but this isn't an issue due to the plentiful options available at the cafe. Try a hot spiced cider - you won't be disappointed! If you can't make it to Fly Creek and are feeling homesick like I was the Fall I had my daughter and couldn't make the trip, they have now started shipping many of their food items nationally via their website, including gift baskets.
Suggestions for nearby family-friendly accommodations
For a luxury splurge (emphasis on the splurge) with amazing views of Otsego Lake and easy access to Cooperstown attractions, you can't go wrong with the Otesaga Resort Hotel.
Suggestions for nearby family-friendly restaurants
I'm a fan of the cafe at the Ommegang Brewery. The food is creative and sophisticated, but there are also kid-friendly offerings (crepes, Belgian fries). Just be aware that as of this posting, there is no changing station in the ladies' room.
