Fort Griswold State Park was the site of several important battles during the Revolutionary War, and with its relics and grassy surroundings, makes for an interesting and peaceful outing for families vacationing near Mystic. The fort is a perfect place for a picnic, and adults can relax in the park while kids have fun dashing up and down the tunnels. There is a historic obelisk that can be climbed, with a great view of southeast Connecticut at the top. The onsite museum displays artifacts relating to revolutionary heroes and villains like Benedict Arnold, and a Spanish-American war gun to examine. The Ebenezer Avery House has been restored and can be viewed. Park rangers are on hand to answer questions. Fort Griswold State Park is a good place for families to spend an afternoon and get a taste of authentic American history.
