Fort Point National Historic Site dates back to the mid-19th century, built to protect San Francisco Bay. It now operates as a fascinating small museum that offers a window into several historic epochs of California and U.S. history. Fort Point has a lot to offer for its size: Free guided and self-guided tours, cannon loading demonstrations, exhibits and videos. Soldiers’ and officers’ quarters are available to view, as well as occasional candlelight tours. But one of the coolest things about Fort Point is its location right under the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge – take pictures from the museum’s roof, or walk right up to the bridge itself. The views are spectacular! Fort Point is a great free attraction for families vacationing in San Francisco.
