Gullah Tour, Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston, South Carolina| Map |
During the unique two-hour Gullah Tours, visitors will explore places that are not typical tourist attractions but offer insight into slavery and contributions to society by black Charlestonians. Tour operators spice up the excursions with stories and the Gullah language, spoken by the Low Country’s first black inhabitants. Among the many sites visited: the Underground Railroad, where runaway slaves used to hide; the Whipping House, a former jail for blacks; and Slave Mart Museum, a former site for auctioning off slaves but that’s a museum today.
