Honolulu, on the southern shore of the isle of Oahu, is a phenomenal vacation destination, nearly perfect and quite dreamy. Adding to the near perfection of this dream on Earth is the fact that there are plenty of things to do in Honolulu which make a Honolulu family vacation great for kids as well as adults. Whether you are interested in a relaxed beach day, an active day exploring nature, a day of learning in at the zoo, aquarium or in the many museums or a day of history and culture, the top attractions in Honolulu can fulfill any desire you might have for enriching activities.
Whether visiting Waikiki or one of the other beautiful beaches of the Honolulu area, sun and surf abound, and give you and your crew ample opportunity to play in the waves. You will find dozens of other activities to include in your family trip plans in Honolulu. For a change of pace while remaining in nature, you might consider climbing the switchback path up the inside of Diamond Head Crater and getting the bird's-eye view of Waikiki. You will pass very interesting rock formations, beautiful plant life and many birds unique to the island along your way to the top of the crater's rim where you can explore look-out platforms once used to defend the island. Another worthwhile hike is Manoa Falls, which boasts a 150 foot vertical drop. This attraction is located about one and a half miles from the nearest roadway, so you'll want to make sure to pack appropriate shoes and provisions so everybody can enjoy the hike. Makapu'u Point, about 25-30 minutes drive from Waikiki, also offers a good hike and scenic views of the Pacific and near-by islands off the coast.
The Honolulu Zoo, The Waikiki Aquarium and the Atlantis Adventures submarine tour are all fantastic, fun Honolulu activities for taking in the living nature of the isle of Oahu. Located around the borders of Kapiolani Park, both the Honolulu Zoo and the aquarium are within walking distance of Waikiki, so if you choose a hotel in this area, such as Trump International Hotel or Kahala Hotel and Resort, many of the Honolulu tourist attractions will be at your fingertips. The Atlantis Adventures submarine tours are accessed from the other end of Waikiki, and offer underwater tours showing reefs, sea turtles, multi-colored fish and other amazements of the deep.
Some indoor Honolulu attractions that are good for kids include the Bishop Museum, a natural and cultural history museum with simply oodles to see. Both kids and adults have plenty to enjoy in this, the largest museum in Hawaii. The Children's Discovery Center is a great place to take children ten years old and younger. It is only a 10 minute drive west of Waikiki and filled with tons of activities for the kids, which might be a good one to save for a possible rainy day.
The top attraction in Honolulu is probably Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial. Pearl Harbor is located about 25 minutes from downtown Honolulu. In fact, it is next to the airport, so you can see it to the left of your plane when you are landing. Each day a limited number of free tickets for the Arizona Memorial are handed out beginning at 7:00 am, and they go quickly. Another excellent World War II museum/monument is the USS Missouri Battleship, which was the location of the formal surrender of the Japanese empire, ending World War II. It is now open to visitors to walk through.
With so many kid-friendly hotels in Honolulu, and tons of things to do in Honolulu with kids, you can see why those who visit cannot wait to return again.
