The Hot Creek Fish Hatchery, located just outside Mammoth Lakes, is one of California’s largest producers of live trout, and provides a fun and different activity in the form of free tours. Self-guided tours of the hatchery take about half an hour, and are interesting to families of all ages. The hatchery raises a half million catchable trout each year for stocking California’s streams and lakes, and it’s fascinating to see them growing from egg to hatchlings to fingerlings in their different tanks. Kids will enjoy buying 25-cent bags of fish food to feed the trout.
