The Indian Temple Mound Museum is a fun and educational place to visit while visiting Fort Walton Beach. The highlight of the city’s Heritage Park and Cultural Center, the museum is situated on an actual ceremonial mound, and represents 12,000 years of Native American life. Over 6,000 artifacts from four southeastern tribes, dating as far back as the 14th century, are displayed among interactive exhibits, plus items related to European explorers, Civil War soldiers, pirates and early settlers. Hands-on exhibits include basket weaving and stone drill displays, along with ancient stone artifacts for children to pick up and examine. Next to the museum are a preserved school house, post office and Civil War-era building, with docents on hand to explain things. The Indian Temple Mound Museum is interesting for both adults and children, and is an excellent low-cost attraction for families.
