Tips for Families

If anyone has a tendency to get motion sick, take Dramamine or stay up top until they stop the boat. Listen to the crew and you'll be fine!

One of my best experiences EVER. I will never forget this place and soo want to go back someday in the future. You actually SEE coral reefs, and its soo close AND TONS of amazing, vibrant colored, different shaped, HUGE and small, fishes. WORTH EVERY PENNY. My friend and I went on a Thursday and the crowd was not that bad, but i was there two and a half hours EARLY. So, it probably will fill up if you go later without a reservation. The time board said they do the scuba trips at 9am, noon, and 3pm, and of course I got there at 12:30pm. DANG! So this would be my friend's and my first time snorkeling in the ocean, but i was VERY excited. My friend, however, needed some serious convincing. I asked a lot of ques...

Experienced my first visit to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park a few weeks ago when my wife and I went snorkeling there. The park itself is very plain. Don't expect anything fancy or out of this world. They do have a pretty nifty indoor aquarium thats kinda neat. I'm sure kids will enjoy that! They also have a small theater that plays a mo...

Snorkeling, kayaking, glassbottom boat tours...you can do it all!  You can enjoy the mangroves, BBQ with family and friends and even get some nice hiking in on their trails.  Doing the snorkeling through them (rather than just going on the beach) is pricier but nice because they take you offshore to their large reef where you can see all kinds of exotic cr...

Ok folks I was at JP today and would like to share my experience with you. Before I get into some details I would like to give two different ratings on this park. One rating for the park itself, its beaches and the water access as well as the water quality And one rating for the activities offered at the park. Rating for the park itself is only a 2-Star Rating for the activities in the park is clearly a 5-Star Why did I rate the park itself only 2? Ok for a simple reason, I love sandy beaches and clean access to the water. JP simply has not that kind of beach that would suit my taste. There are only 2 swimming areas which is actually perfectly fine. However when I took my snorkeling equipment for a warming u...

My hubby-elect bought us some snorkel gear for my birthday a few years back, and we haven't properly done it any justice quite yet. We decided to take a much-needed mini vacation in Key Largo a weekend back to this place and do some diving off the reef. What can I say? Thank you, Pennekamp, for introducing me to a passion for getting in the water and looking at cool stuff. Because of this trip, I'm planning on getting scuba certified after our wedding. We signed up for the 3 pm snorkeling tour. There are a lot of aimless tourists, and the staff seems to manage the big crowds well enough without having to resort to hiring border collies. There are a number of boats that take the crowds out to the reef. Ours h...

I've been here a few times, once with a group of friends, and the other time with family when they were visiting the area.  Both were good experiences.  The prices are reasonable, the staff is always friendly and helpful whether you need help getting fitted with gear, have questions about the trip and what you'll see, or you ask them to recommend a good restaurant in the area.  The first time I went snorkeling here the water was calm, visibility underwater was great and the dive was excellent.  The second time it was overcast and windy that day, so the visibility was poor and I wasn't as happy with the reef they took us to, but was still a good day.  I think I'd like to return just to canoe or kayak through ...
