Other Nearby Places to Visit
The Laguna Bavaro wildlife refuge just recently opened up to the public, giving people a chance to enter this beautiful lagoon located in the eastern region of the Dominican Republic for the first time in years. Families who sign up for a tour of the refuge will take a trip to the town of Cabeza de Toro, which had little contact with the outside world until about two decades ago when it was turned into a tourist attraction by developers who were also building hotels in the area. Today the refuge is home to numerous species of plants, reptiles, amphibians and fish, including a fish called the "Higuey Cypronodon" that can be found nowhere else in the world. There are also a variety of endangered birds that can be seen around the lagoon as well, making this a great place for nature lovers. Visitors on guided walking tours will be able to learn all about the exotic animals and lush tropical plants of region while enjoying the wonderful Caribbean weather. One of the more exciting ways to experience Laguna Bavaro is to explore by kayak, and there are family-friendly kayaking tours available for visitors who want to try this approach.
