Families will find an array of animals as well as interactive critter experiences, behind-the-scenes tours and various attractions at The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Maryland. In addition to viewing mammals, reptiles, penguins, amphibians and birds in their respective exhibits, kids have opportunities to feed a giraffe and groom a goat. Families are encouraged to visit the zoo's farmyard to brush, groom and pet various species of goats. An ideal spot for young zoo-goers, the goat grooming corral is a fun and entertaining attraction when visiting The Maryland Zoo with kids. While in the barnyard, kids can also pet donkeys, chickens, sheep and cattle. At the giraffe feeding station, visitors can purchase a branch of acacia for $2 to feed the giraffe. There is also a separate, non-gated deck for viewing and photography. For a special insider's look at how zoo animals are cared for, visitors can make arrangements for a Behind-the-Scenes tour. Options include venturing inside the world of African penguins on Rock Island and checking out a polar bear kitchen. Five fascinating tours are offered and must be reserved at least one month in advance. Prices start at $300 for up to four people. All Behind-the-Scenes tours include general zoo admission. More fun things to do with kids include riding a camel in the African Journey exhibit. Rides are $7 per person and are available from May through August. A 10-minute train ride departs from the train station near the zoo?s farmyard and chugs on a one-mile track behind the African Journey exhibit through a beautiful section of the Jones Falls Watershed before making the return trip. Train rides are $4 per person. In addition, children of all ages will enjoy a ride on a classic carousel, which operates daily, weather permitting. Rides are $3 per person. The Maryland Zoo offers several dining options and vending machines throughout the property. Strollers and non-motorized wheelchair rentals are available for a small fee. Please inquire at the Wild Things Gift shop upon entering the zoo.
