The ancient Mayan Ruins at San Gervasio are located on the island of Cozumel in Mexico, and make for an excellent side trip for families vacationing in the area. Cozumel is of course famous for its snorkeling and diving, and as a favorite cruise ship port. The Ruins are located within a Mexican National Monument which in turn lies in Quintana Roo State Park. If not snorkeling or diving at Cozumel, the ruins are an excellent attraction in their own right. Though not as well-known as Chichen Itza, these ruins are a fascinating look into the past. Here, Mayan women paid tribute to Ixchel , the goddess of fertility. There are many options for getting to and touring the ruins. Bus tours are offered by local travel agencies and sold at well-marked kiosks around town, and tours are also organized by the cruise ships. A private van tour of the island can be arranged, and do-it-yourselfers can simply hire a cab, rent a car or even a motor scooter. Once past the multiple agencies? ticket gates to get in (it?s complicated), a local guide can be hired on the spot for less than $20 USD. The Mayan ruins at San Gervasio are a pleasant break from the busy beaches of Cozumel, and families will especially enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings.
