Mission de Nombre de Dios in St. Augustine can trace its origins to 1565, when explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles first landed in the New World. Today, the lovely mission is a historic site commemorating the founding of the country’s first Christian church, and the site of the first Catholic mass. Visitors can stroll the grounds to sites such as the Prince of Peace Church -- which is dedicated to freedom from war and strife -- as well as monuments to Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales, chaplain to the area’s first European colonists. Continuing on a walking tour, visitors will encounter the Great Cross, a massive stainless steel cross that soars an impressive 280 feet above the nearby Matanzas River. The lovely Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the chapel of Nuestra Senora de la Leche and the quiet outdoor altar are also important stops on the self-guided tour. Families can also visit the extensive gift store for a variety of books and trinkets. Kids and history fans will be particularly interested in the site’s ongoing archeological excavations, which have unearthed evidence of some of the country’s earliest settlements.
