Get There Early to Avoid the Crowds

Flag review

Tips for Families

Go early or late to avoid the crowds. Hours are extended during the summer, so check the website so you can do your best to not bump elbows with every other tourist at the museum.

World-Class Aviation Museum

Flag review

Tips for Families

Don't skip this museum if you're traveling with small children. Obviously, they're not going to "get" all the history and whatnot, but the visual stimulation and the excitement of boarding a "real" plane is well worth the trip. Take the kids by the signs explaining the requirements for female flight attendants in the 1950s. It's a great starting point for a discussion about changing cultural views of gender roles as well as sexism in the workplace. They might also be interested in the Amelia Earhart display.

Suggestions for nearby family-friendly accommodations

I would suggest finding suite-style accommodations so that adults and kids can have separate sleeping spaces and you can have a kitchen in the room. Normally I would suggest Homewood Suites by Hilton, but as of August 2013, the Washington, DC location in Logan Circle is not up to the standards that Homewood Suites typically adheres to. We had several issues with our room (see my other review) mostly due to dilapidated facilities, and felt that our experience there was unacceptable compared to our excellent experiences at other Homewood Suites hotels. Go with another suite chain (Residence Inn, for example) until Homewood Suites DC completes substantial renovations and gets this location up to par.

Suggestions for nearby family-friendly restaurants

If you visit the museum around lunch time, exit to the left, walk a little ways, and you'll start to see the food trucks lining up along the streets. Follow the trail, and you'll soon be in food truck heaven. Food truck fare is mobile, cheap, good, fast, and everybody gets what they want! Make sure you have cash, because not all will take credit/debit cards.
