Little Italy with Gold Rush HistoryFlag review
North Beach is San Francisco's Little Italy and next door neighbor of Chinatown. It's full of Italian restaurants and bakeries. It's also has loads of history. This used to be a waterfront and after it was filled in became the infamous Barbary Coast. It's a vibrant area with a fun ethnic mix and we watched Chinese women doing Tai Chi in the park alongside kids playing on the playground. The Coit Tower is nearby and accessible by a steep incline. Parking is challenging and you're better off finding a lot if you'll be here more than a couple hours - we use bestparking.com.
Tips for Families
If your kids can pay attention for a couple of hours, the Local Tastes of the City North Beach food tour is excellent. We visited the oldest bakery in town as well as learning how coffee beans are roasted at a cafe, plus tasted fudge and several pastas and learned about the Gold Rush history of the area. It's affordable for families because kids are only $15.
