Old San Juan, Puerto Rico is a charming neighborhood of restored 16th- and 17th-century Spanish colonial buildings, and is a fantastic place for vacationing families to wander at their leisure. Old San Juan is the place for soaking up fascinating history, and is rife with things to do and see. Everything seems to be within walking distance, and visitors are always pleasantly surprised at how pleasant - and clean - everything is. Main attractions include La Catedral de San Juan (burial site of Ponce de Leon), El Morro, a tall castle overlooking the sea, and the famous forts of San Cristobal and La Fortaleza. Old San Juan is full of museums too, such as the Museo de las Americas and La Princesa ? a restored former jail, now the Puerto Rico Tourism Department. This is a good place to start, since they provide all kinds of free literature and maps of the area. On weekend afternoons, stroll the Paseo de la Princesa and enjoy outdoor music, artisans and the relaxed island vibe. There?s even a free trolley for when someone in the family gets tired! Old San Juan offers a delightful way to spend a day taking in the best of Puerto Rico.
