Old Town State Historic Park, San Diego, California

Old Town State Historic Park is a historic site in San Diego, a compound of old restored buildings that give an authentic taste of historic California. It’s also a very entertaining, free walkable attraction full of cool relics and unusual displays, as well as good places to eat and shop. Most visitors take the trolley to Old Town from central San Diego, which is a fun ride in itself. Families can expect to spend anywhere from one to three hours wandering Old Town; it’s not very big, but the action is slow, and it’s best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. The Historic Plaza is where community events are held, and there are always costumed folks going about the business of making things, shoeing horses, performing dances and explaining exhibits. There’s a small map handed out free which describes the various buildings one can visit, and very few of them cost anything to enter – fees are usually only a dollar or two. Buildings include the old schoolhouse (California’s first), printing office and brick courthouse. The Seeley Stables Museum has an excellent collection of wagons and carriages. Many of the buildings allow children to participate in hands-on activities, and everyone is welcome to pet the burros. There’s a pretty good Mexican restaurant at Old Town with outdoor seating, as well as assorted casual snacks available. For a fun and educational afternoon, Old Town State Historic Park is a must for families visiting San Diego.
