Our Lady at the Heavenly Alter (Santa Maria in Aracoeli), Rome, Italy
Piazza d'Aracoeli, Rome, Italy| Map |
Sitting proudly at the top of the Capitoline Hill of Rome is the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. Though not as grand as St. Peter’s Basilica, Our Lady at the Heavenly Altar (Santa Maria in Aracoeli) pays tribute to the Virgin Mary. Residing on what was once the location of a temple for the pagan god Juno, the basilica is a brightly gilded, ornately decorated church displaying frescoes painted by Pinturicchio. High wooden ceilings cover this sacred space and monuments and tombs cover the floor and walls.
