Palancar Reef, Cozumel, Mexico

It was the famous marine explorer Jacques Cousteau himself who discovered the incredible Palancar Reef at Cozumel, Mexico, and pronounced it one of the best diving spots in the Western Hemisphere. Palancar is considered by divers second only to the Great Barrier Reef in terms of water warmth and clarity, amazing underwater topography and coral outcroppings, and of course a rich abundance of marine life. There are various levels of dive spots to challenge divers, and some of the areas are definitely for experts. But dive they must, for 100 to 160-foot visibility is a rare experience indeed. For families, Palancar Reef is a great opportunity to take up snorkeling, and for non-swimmers, a glass bottom boat tour brings the colorful sea life just as close up. Expect to see black-tipped sharks, sea turtles, sting rays, barracuda, eels and huge schools of tropical fish zooming to and fro. The island has beautiful beaches of fine white sand, and even some small Mayan ruins to investigate, so there’s plenty to occupy the eye and mind when not engaged in watersports. Palancar Reef is a superb destination for families who want to enjoy a little slice of paradise on earth.
