Palazzo Grassi, Venice, Italy
Campo San Samuele 3231, Venice, Italy 30124| Map |
Situated along the Grand Canal in the Campo San Samuele, the Palazzo Grassi began its life as a family home in the mid-1700s. However, after changing hands multiple times throughout the years, the impressive structure is now home to a stunning art and history museum, as well as a garden theatre. The museum is unique in that it showcases a revolving collection of works almost exclusively obtained from the private collection of billionaire Francois Pinault. Despite the classical façade, the triangular Punta della Dogana - which was originally a water tower and customs house that divided the Grand and Guidecca Canals - belies a shocking modern, minimalist interior. The Tadao Ando-designed galleries provide the perfect back drop for this world-class modern art collection. Again, the Palazzo Grassi is a lovely destination, but more appropriate for older children with an interest in the arts.
