Protection Center Park (Parco Natura Viva), Venice, Italy

A spacious safari and zoo, Protection Center Park (Parco Natura Viva) is a great open air destination for families craving a break from the city. From its humble beginnings as a countryside farmhouse, the Protection Center Park -- located outside of Venice near Lake Garda -- has evolved to provide a safe and beautiful refuge to a number of indigenous and exotic species. The Protection Center Park is a true no-brainer for kid-friendly entertainment and offers a wealth of kid-specific programming. The zoo area features animals from five continents including cheetahs, wolves, flamingoes, panda bears and Siberian tigers. The Aquaterrarium, Tropical Greenhouse and Dinosaur Park (featuring life-size replicas of the prehistoric beasts) are also a big draw, and very popular with younger visitors. Travelers should also be sure to rent a car and take advantage of the park’s drive-thru safari; where lions, zebras, elephants and other big game roam freely. However, the park isn’t simply a zoo complex; it’s very much involved in biodiversity efforts, conservation, responsible breeding and works tirelessly to protect endangered species.
