The Palacio Real de Madrid (Royal Palace of Madrid) is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family in Madrid, though it’s reserved mainly for state ceremonies. The Royal Family actually resides in the Palacio de la Zarzuela, leaving the palace for tourists to enjoy most of the year. It is difficult to do the Palace justice in words –it is unbelievably opulent and ornate, dripping with rococo décor and furnishings. There are over 2,000 rooms in the Palace, and one can take either a guided or group tour to visit some of them. A half day can be easily spent admiring the armor room, housewares, textiles, porcelain and acres of gilded everything. The Palacio Real de Madrid is usually placed on the ''must-see'' list, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead and arrive when the Palace first opens. When the tour is over, the adjacent square offers places to sit, relax and eat.
