What began as part of a Benedictine Monastery on Venice’s San Giorgio island is now the beautiful San Giorgio Maggiore church. Situated just minutes by boat from St. Mark’s Square, San Giorgio Maggiore dates back to 1566 and features two stunning works by famed artist Jacopo Tintoretto. The church’s interior is just as impressive as its brilliant white marble facade. Filled with elegant columns, arches, railings and featuring a side chapel, San Giorgio Maggiore is a fantastic place for quiet reflection in the midst of a frenzied day of sightseeing. The church also features a lovely campanile which was constructed in 1791 and mirrors that of neighboring St. Mark’s Basilica. From the top of the bell tower, visitors have a stunning view of the canal-crossed city, including the Doge’s Palace and Palazzo San Marco. For a cool 3 Euros each, the whole family can enjoy an unforgettable Venetian sunset from high above the city streets.
