The Basilica of Santa Maria del Santo Spirito (St. Mary of the Holy Spirit) -- more commonly called Santo Spirito -- is located in the Oltrarno quarter, facing the square with the same name. The church has 38 side chapels, which contain numerous artworks. Families with kids may find it interesting that Michelangelo was just 17-years-old when he made a wooden crucifix for the church. Visitors can see the crucifix in the octagonal sacristy that can be reached from the west aisle of the church. The square facing the church was created in the 13th century for the purpose of serving the crowds who gathered to pray. Today, the square is popular with visitors for its little market with vendors selling produce, clothing and flowers.
