Shangri La, Honolulu/Waikiki, Hawaii
4055 Papu Circle, Honolulu/Waikiki, Hawaii 96816| Map |
Shangri La, the 1930s former home of philanthropist Doris Duke, is a unique attraction on Oahu, Hawaii. Off the beaten path, but located right on the water at Diamond Head, Shangri La is now a museum dedicated to Islamic art. Small guided tours are mounted from the Honolulu Museum of Art 15 minutes away, and visitors are transported by minivan to the home. Not including the drive, tours last about an hour and a half, and include an introductory video and views of the main house, courtyards, stairway, powder room, living room, dining room, library and lanai. Shangri La represents a combination of modernist architecture and Islamic art in a tropical setting. Reservations are very limited and may be made directly at the museum (also a great place to visit and combine with this tour), or purchased online. True to its name, Shangri La is a truly exotic experience, and provides a serene afternoon for families who want to shake off the bustle of Waikiki Beach.
