The history of the St. Anthony Falls is tied up with the history of Minneapolis. Known as the ''birthplace of Minneapolis'' the riverfront district, where the falls are located, provides wonderful opportunities for shopping, dining and viewing 19th century architectural. The falls themselves have a rich history. The only true waterfall of the Mississippi River, the falls were later transformed into industry. They became the backbone of the flour mills as the power of the 50-foot drop was harnessed and began to power water wheels, millraces and rotation shafts. Because of its central role in the success of Minneapolis, the St. Anthony Falls are a great place for families to stop, grab a bite to eat nearby and simply surround themselves with history.
