Steamboat Lake State Park is a great place for family recreation year-round. Activities offered range from cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing to camping, hiking, biking and boating. There are large lakeside campsites with showers and free firewood, with ranger programs every day during the summer. Rangers talk about crawdad catch-and-release rules, native animals, birds, bats and snakes, star gazing, wildflowers and more. The visitors center is a fun and interesting place to stop by first, and is a source for maps and brochures of the area. Canoes, kayaks and paddle boats can be rented from the marina, and there’s a small general store for sundries and souvenirs. For families not planning to stay overnight, Steamboat Lake State Park is still a fine place to visit for an afternoon of educational fun and outdoor exploration.
