USS Pampanito, San Francisco, California
Pier 45 @ Fisherman Wharf, San Francisco, California 94133| Map |
Fisherman’s Wharf has always been the top tourist spot in San Francisco, and its maritime attractions are some of its most interesting features – like the USS Pampanito. The USS Pampanito is a World War II-era submarine that operates now as a museum and memorial on Pier 45. The offered tour is brief, but visitors get a feel for what it was like to live and work in close quarters during the fierce Pacific conflict. There are other attractions that are part of the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park – there is another naval vessel to see which is berthed right next to the USS Pampanito, and the excellent Maritime Museum is a six-block stroll west from Fisherman’s Wharf. The USS Pampanito makes a great follow-up to a boat tour of the bay, or a seafood lunch at Fisherman’s Wharf.
