The heart of San FranciscoFlag review
Union Square is the informal gateway to the city. From here, you can walk to major department stores, restaurants and Chinatown. It's ideal for shopping and dining no matter the budget. It also makes a great home base for accessing the cable car turnaround and touring the city. While the waterfront has more family-friendly attractions, Union Square has a lively ambiance (thanks to the clanging cable cars) that even kids will enjoy.
Tips for Families
Being in the hub of the city, Union Square is an ideal place to stay in a hotel. Choose a hotel near the cable car turnaround to make public transportation easily accessible.

Mostly unnoticed in my regular SF shopping trips...but when she is all decked out for Christmas and Hanukkah....she is quite a sight!! We braved the crowds so the DGD's could see the lights. I was a bit overwhelmed by how hard it was to simply walk down the street....and there was a disgusting woman smoking...
I love Union Sq, there is always something going on! In my time here I have - Gazing at the beautiful Christmas tree - Watched a small children ice dancing competition - Witnessed a middle aged Ro...
Love hanging out here on a Sunday afternoon or those hot heat wave, late-nights. It's a beautiful place-like-park when it's not drizzling or foggy. All walks of life hang out here. It's a great place to eat lunch or enjoy your favorite ice cream while people watching. Ther...
Tourist trap, but nevertheless, one of my favorite parts of the city! Sometimes I cable car down to Union Square on a lazy Saturday to check out the scene and get lost in the mix. Whether it's a beat-boxing group of kids in front of Forever 21, Europeans taking pictures of ...
Union Square is a destination i haven't been to for a while. i've always seen more birds here than people, especially that flying rat kind. the blackbirds and swaallows i don't mind. Union Square is probably known for it's parking garage. i may have gone in once or twice but haven't gone since. maybe it's expensive. highlights at union square: -holiday ice rink : a decade or so ago, my kids really liked it here. maybe it was a lot cheaper and less crowded then. street parking was also possible at that time. -festivals of all kinds: korean, filipino celebrations of culture and/or independence: nice display of diversity. -the open space in the mass of concrete is welcome. just watch out for dem birds! -protes...
Everybody's waiting for the man with the bag... No, I'm not talking about the "man bag" of Friends fame. I'm talking about Santa. Only 9 more days until Santa does his thing! Whenever I see decorated Christmas trees I feel all warm and happy inside. I wish I was a little girl again. I loved that feeling of excitement and anticipation. A t...
