The Vietnam Memorial Wall is one of Washington D.C.'s most recent and sobering monuments, and is a must-see for families visiting the other attractions on the Mall. The low-slung monument is a somber wedge of black marble etched with the names of the 58,000 soldiers who were lost in the Vietnam War. Family members of the deceased and other visitors are seen there every day, making rubbings of names and leaving touching personal mementoes. Even young children get the sense that this is an important place to pay respects – the Memorial Wall is a place that’s about family: Both the relatives of the soldiers, and our greater American family. The Wall is located in the Constitution Gardens and never closes, so it may be visited in the evening when the other monuments are lit up. The Vietnam Memorial Wall should be a touchstone for everyone who travels to Washington D.C.
