St. Augustine’s breathtaking Villa Zorayda Castle Museum is a bona fide jaw-dropper. Built by Franklin Smith in 1883, this historical and architectural masterpiece, designed in the Moorish Spanish style, is modeled on the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. Having served as a private home, casino, club, movie set and now museum, this National Register of Historic Places-recognized structure is one for the books. The museum features an astounding collection of antiques such as a 2,400-year-old Egyptian cat hair rug (found in a pyramid!), an amazingly intricate gaming table and exquisite porcelain pieces. The hour-long tour covers the home’s quirky original owner, as well as interesting architectural nuances. For example, every window in the home is a different size and shape. With so many lovely artifacts just begging to be touched, the Villa Zorayda Castle Museum may be best for adults and older children, although well-behaved little ones will still enjoy the tour.
