Spring Point Ledge LighthouseFlag review
Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse is much smaller than what most tourists might imagine a Maine lighthouse to look like, so make sure you are aware of this to avoid disappointment. We visited in winter at a time when tours weren't available, so unfortunately we didn't get to go inside or speak to a docent. However, we did enjoy some pretty spectacular waterfront scenery! The lighthouse itself is charming and quite photogenic. It's definitely worth a stop, but if you're not planning on doing a full tour, expect a short waterfront stroll.
Tips for Families
Call ahead to arrange a tour with a lighthouse docent for the full experience. Before you visit, go to http://www.springpointlight.org/ for a complete history of the lighthouse and a PDF map of all the lighthouses in Casco Bay. You can definitely visit 2-4 in the same day. In my opinion, if you can only get to one, visit Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, which is not only larger and more well-known, but is also located in a park with picnic and outdoor recreation facilities. However, some visitors disagree with me, saying that Spring Point Ledge has more character. See my review of Portland Head Light for a post lighthouse-hopping lunch recommendation.
