Wheeler Opera House, Aspen, Colorado

Aspen’s beloved Wheeler Opera House has hosted some big names in its day. From Lily Tomlin to Bill Maher to John Denver, the 120+ year-old building has long been a mainstay on the Colorado arts scene. Upon entering the magnificent performance space many visitors are rendered speechless. Though damaged by fire and the passing of years, the entire building has been painstakingly restored, even down to the hand-stenciled decor and massive crystal chandelier. Although today the Wheeler Opera House generally plays host to films and stage productions, it’s also a fantastic (and kid-friendly) venue for concerts, dance performances and, of course, the opera. Visitors can easily catch a show anytime of year, as the facility is THE place in town to enjoy art house, independent and mainstream movies. Special events like The Aspen Songwriters’ Festival and the Aspen Laff Festival are also hosted here. Visitors should inquire about upcoming family-friendly performances.
